Tom and Jennifer's Handfasting

On November 22nd, 2003, Thomas Jerry Doneske and Jennifer Leah Pitcock were united in handfasting at Edwin Warner Park in Nashville, Tennessee, by Mr. Patrick Owen, a High Priest in the Seax Wicca tradition. In attendance were a small handful of friends, who afterwards accompanied the couple to a restaurant for a casual celebratory reception.

Handfasting is an ancient tradition of joining together a couple in the witness of friends, loved ones, and the general community. It was once common practice in outlying villages without regular access to clergy for marriage and is practiced today primarily by Neo-pagans as a more Pagan alternative to the traditional wedding, but can be practiced and participated in by anyone of any faith.

Handfastings originally signified a betrothal and lasted only a year and a day; today they can sigify marriage itself and last as long as the couple specify (in our case, forever). Handfastings can either be legal or non-legal, depending on the ordination of the officiator and the choice of the couple. Though our kind officiator was legally ordained, we chose this to be a non-legal wedding; that honour has been reserved for our full traditional wedding, which will take place in the nearest October that it is financially possible.
