A Greater Joy Than Flight

(Winter 2000; drawn on paper, painted in Paint Shop Pro)

This fairy was the very fist completed work I ever did by scanning a pencil sketch and painting it digitally. Also, this picture was an exercise in background for me as well. I didn't usually do much of a background, so this work was practice in creating a detailed background.

The inspiration for this came from my misguided wish to learn ballet (I tried; Swan Lake doesn't need a flopping dodo like me :-)...the image of a fairy dancing on a mushroom popped in my head one night, and I immediately sketched it. I realize the spider web looks as if it's attached to the fairy, like she's frozen in time, but I actually meant for the web to be behind her--I didn't recede it enough into the background, and I lost the master file of this piece long ago in a hard drive crash, so there's nothing I can do about it now. I may simply go back to the sketch and paint a completely new version at some point.
