Primal Magic

(September 2002; sketched and painted in PhotoShop)

This was my first really big serious digital painting project. At the time, I didn't do backgrounds (save for maybe a general portait-like wash of colour, which still seems to be a big favourite for me), so that's one big thing here. Another is that I normally begin with a hand-drawn and scanned sketch with details well planned out. This was sketched in PhotoShop in a very large and loose way, then painted in PhotoShop, where the details were worked out as I went. I'm happy with everything but the grass--it's too "hairy" looking. I'll probably revisit this later and try to fix the hairy grass problem.

This was actually done while following the Digital Realism tutorial on the tutorials page of Ursula Vernon's website, Metal and Magic. She still hasn't finished part 2, which deals with painting the subject, but I just couldn't wait, so I went ahead and painted her anyway. :-) By the way, visit Ursula's website--she's incredibly amazing!
