Secrets held in Stone

by Jennifer Pitcock

Lying there in the desert,
now only a pile of bones--
nothing more.
Burning sun of the Badlands,
same sun that burned down eons ago,
when the light of life pulsed within.
What were your eyes like--
serpentine and cold, or full of life and warmth?
What was it like to hear your calls
echoing across the vastness of Earth in her youth?
Did your heart beat in adoration of your little ones,
their tiny cries etched within your soul?
Were you agile and graceful,
well versed in the steps of the Dance of Life?

What happened so long ago--
what heartless force stripped your beautiful soul
from this earth forever?
Rain, frost, Masque of Death,
or starry mountain from the sky--
or Divine Hand that wiped away your very existence
to make room for "better" stock?
A Divinity that wished to shroud your life in shadow forever,
A Force you proved could take your life...

But not your legacy.
