Poems

Shadow Sharer

by Jennifer Pitcock
(for Edgar Allan Poe, 1809-1849)

beyond the door,
beyond the hall,
behind the mirror,
inside the wall.
deep underground
it can be found,
here in the dark,
I hear your call.

beyond the book,
beyond the page,
behind the eyes,
inside the haze.
deep down inside,
within your mind,
you take me from
this damnéd age.

beyond the years,
beyond the days,
behind the smile,
inside the pain.
deep in your soul,
I see my own--
our lonely hearts
both beat the same.
